Croeso i Adran Y Gymraeg Ysgol Rhosnesni

The Welsh language is important within our school. Students are encouraged to use their Cymraeg in all lessons to secure a grade 1 for their achievements.

Students are taught a range of key Welsh phrases on entering Year 7 to enable them to use the Welsh language incidentally across the curriculum.

Our mission in the Welsh Department is enabling our students to succeed and thrive in a bilingual Wales.

Welsh is a growing, dynamic language which is increasingly required by employers.

Two languages, twice the skills give each student an important advantage to broaden their opportunities in life.

Dwyieithrwydd allgyrsiol / Bilingual extra-curricular opportunities

In addition to formal Welsh lessons, each student is given the opportunity to participate in a broad bilingual extra-curricular programme designed to raise each child’s awareness of the language and its culture.

We work in close partnership with the Urdd to give students the opportunity to practise their Welsh language skills beyond the classroom and experience Welsh culture.

The school hosts an active Urdd branch which meets as a weekly free after-school club for students from all year groups and holds additional group and individual recitation preparation during form time to prepare students to compete in the Urdd Eisteddfod.

The Urdd club focuses on providing opportunities for students to use the Welsh language informally through a range of activities such as cooking, crafts, quizzes, research and games.

Please note that due to the current COVID-19 precautionary measures, the Urdd club is not currently meeting, however, Urdd club resources and activities may be accessed online through the following link.

All students have the opportunity to further develop their Welsh language skills on specialist language courses at the Urdd centre of Glan Llyn. As a selected school to participate in the Urdd’s Cymraeg Bob Dydd initiative during 2019-2020, our students were given the opportunity to attend Welsh language courses in Cardiff and Glan Llyn at a heavily discounted rate.

Students from all year groups who display a flair for writing are given the opportunity to regularly contribute Welsh articles to the local Welsh paper ‘Y Clawdd’ to be a part of the vibrant Welsh community that is Wrecsam.

Eisteddfod Ysgol Rhosnesni will be held on Tuesday, 1st of March 2022. Details of set on-stage and off-stage competitions across the curriculum will be shared with students and parents at the start of the summer term.

The highlight of the Eisteddfod will be the chairing ceremony where the winning Welsh bard will be awarded the Eisteddfod chair for their poem on the topic of ‘Cymru’.
