Dear Parent/Carer,

I would like to apologise for today’s closure, particularly the fact that we could not give families as much notice as we would have liked.

The site team started working early this morning and we were hopeful that we could open safely.  A lot of gritting was undertaken, but many of our paths and grounds were still very dangerous.  Ultimately, I had to make a difficult decision based on the safety of large groups of students moving through treacherous outdoor areas.  As Wrexham’s largest secondary school, we have an expansive, complex and sloping site.  Some schools are able to keep their students inside or away from the increased risks presented by ice and snow. However, our lesson changeovers require the outdoor movement of students in huge numbers.  I could not mitigate the obvious dangers to our young people.  A tough call had to be made.

Finally, I have come to realise that whatever difficult decisions I take in relation to snow or closure, someone will object or criticise.  I ask only that parents consider the weight of responsibility I carry, as I wrestle with these rare but very important decisions.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Cofion,
